Wellfleet Shellfish Trail Map

Shellfish and Wellfleet have been intertwined throughout American history. In his book, “A Geography of Oysters: The Connoisseur’s Guide To Oyster Eating In North America”, author Rowan Jacobsen observed that Wellfleet Oysters were big before the United States was!

Wellfleet harbor is a perfect environment for the nurturing and growth of oysters and other shellfish species. Commercial harvest of Wellfleet Oysters began in 1665 and remains strong to this day. Wellfleet Oysters are enjoyed world-wide.

Learn more about Wellfleet’s humble beginnings. It’s rich shellfishing history and points of interest are illustrated in the Wellfleet Shellfish Trail, a walking guide produced by SPAT in 2011.
