Behind the Scenes at the 2020 OysterFest

Lights, cameras, masks: ‘The shuck must go on!’

There will be a shuck off at the 20th annual OysterFest. But there will be no competitive parking, no pressing through crowds on Main Street, and no lines under the beer tent. This will be the first and, it is widely hoped, only time that getting comfy will be part of your OysterFest experience. That’s because you will be watching the shuck off as it streams on your small screen via YouTube this Saturday, Oct. 17, at 5 p.m.

Don’t worry. The production values of what the organizers at SPAT are calling the “All-Star Shuck Off” will be well beyond those of your last Zoom meeting. A nine-person crew is setting up to handle cameras, lighting, and sound at the WHAT theater, where shuckers will take the stage. Renowned chefs have buffed up their favorite oyster recipes for cooking spots. And everybody involved has been through physically distant dress rehearsals under the supervision of producer Liz Shook of Brewster and director Max Esposito of Boston’s Sweet Rickey Productions. Here is a peek at all the work going on behind the scenes.

Virtual shuck
Wellfleet’s Chopper Young has won every OysterFest shuck off he’s entered (in 2002, 2005, 2009, 2014, and 2018) and taken trophies at international competitions, too. Will he outshuck nine others to take this year’s trophy? Find out on Saturday. Go to wellfleetspat.org.
Virtual shuck
You know it’s not your typical shuck off when there’s a Covid officer on location. In preparing contestants for the event, Janet Drohan explains that this year there won’t be any hugs or handshakes, just the alternative elbow bump.
Virtual shuck
Three Wellfleet judges, Mike May, Nik Watkins, and Necee Regis, are joined this year by John Baby of Toronto, who dons an oyster shell vest as he explains this year’s rules to contestants.
Virtual shuck
Jodi Birchall rehearses her emcee role. The entire show is choreographed, not only for the production, but because every step — how shuckers approach, enter, and exit the stage, where judges stand — takes social distancing into account.
Virtual shuck
Oysters from Jim O’Connell were delivered to the theater as props for rehearsal day. Perfectly shaped and deep-cupped, the oysters will have to be consistent for all 10 shuckers when the event gets underway. Each shucker will receive a bag of 26 oysters and choose 24 to shuck.
