Wellfleet Shellfish Harvester Relief Program

In response to the current COVID-19 health crisis, SPAT has developed a set of initiatives to support Wellfleet’s shellfish harvesters and their families at this time of need. Wellfleet’s shellfishing industry is seeing a catastrophic drop in shellfish sales due to the closing of retail locations and restaurants regionally and nationally, affecting shellfishermen’s ability to maintain their businesses and provide for their families.

S.P.A.T. responded by committing more than $100,000 to the Wellfleet Shellfish Harvester Relief Program to offer financial relief to Wellfleet’s Shellfish Harvesters and their families struggling in these unprecedented economically challenging times.

The Wellfleet Shellfish Harvester Relief Program consists of two components:

S.P.A.T. Community Food Share Program

The S.P.A.T. Community Food Share Program was designed to offer financial relief to Wellfleet’s Shellfish harvesters by maintaining the regular routine while providing nutritious meals for those in need in our community and beyond. SPAT purchased freshly harvested oysters and clams from Wellfleet’s Shellfishermen and women. The harvesters delivered their product to a wholesale distributor and from it was delivered to community kitchens and restaurants cooking hot meals for the most needy in our community, free of charge.  The program ran for several months, moving nearly 60,000 pieces of shellfish out of the water into kitchens all over Cape Cod and beyond.  We will keep an eye out to what this winter brings, and restart the program if necessary.

Wellfleet Shellfish Harvester Relief Fund

SPAT has established the Wellfleet Shellfish Harvester Relief Fund to support Wellfleet’s shellfishing families with essential household expenses (rent, mortgage, utilities, etc.) during times of crisis. SPAT has partnered with Lower Cape Outreach Council to administer the fund.
